A Brief Summary of Media/Film/Animation/Photography.

These are notes with a small brainstorm I've scanned from my sketchbook with a small definition of what media can be to me Media is.

Media is the main means of mass communication around the world whether it is through Television, Magazines, Radio or the newspaper.
Without any sorts of media we could not create anything and show it off to the world and
communicate with the world

Media can also Include social Media like Facebook,Instagram, Twitter, Skype, Snapchat, Myspace, Whatsapp, Viber, Tango, Msn,Yahoo etc... It can also Include people working in media Like the director, producer, editor, chief executive, make-up and hair artist, special effects and cgi artist, prosthetics artist, assistant, cameraman,writer/scriptwriter, artist, concept artist, animation, musician, music producer, storyboard creator, sound engineer, cinematography, photographer, soundtrack etc.....

Film                                                                            Film is a story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images which can be shown in a cinema or television. It's also called movie or motion picture, is a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images due to the Phi Phenomenon .

This optical illusion causes the audience to perceive continuous motion between separate objects viewed rapidly in succession. A film is created by Photographing actual scenes with a motion Picture camera ; by photographing drawings or miniature models using traditional animation  techniques; by means of CGI and computer animation; or by a combination of some or all of these techniques and other visual effects

The word "cinema" is often used to refer to the industry of films and filmmaking or to the art of filmmaking itself. The contemporary definition of cinema is the art of simulating experiences to communicate ideas, stories, perceptions, feelings, beauty or atmosphere by the means of recorded or programmed moving images along with other sensory stimulations

The name "film" originates from the fact that Photographic film  (also called film stock ) has historically been the medium  for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picturepicture showmoving picturephotoplay and flick. The most common term in the United States is movie, while in Europe film is preferred. Terms for the field in general include the big screenthe silver screenthe movies and cinema; the latter is commonly used in scholarly texts and critical essays, especially by European writers. In early years, the word sheet was sometimes used instead of screen.

Animation
Animation can be a manipulation of electronic images done by computer/ drawn/clay/photos in order to create a moving image
It's also the  the process of creating motion  and shape change illusion   by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators  are artists who specialize in the creation of animation.

Animations can be recorded  on either analogue media, such as a flip book , motion, picture film, video tape, or on digital media , including formats such as animated GIF , flash animation  or digital video. To display it, a digital camera ,claymation/puppets computer, or projector  are used.
Animation creation methods include the traditional animation  creation method and those involving stop motion animation  of two and three-dimensional objects, such as paper cutouts ,puppets and clay figures  . Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second.

Stop-motion
Stop motion (also known as stop frame) is an animation  technique to make a physically manipulated object or persona appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Dolls with movable joints or clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Stop motion animation using plasticine is called clay animation  or "clay-mation". Not all stop motion requires figures or models; many stop motion films can involve using humans, household appliances and other things for comedic effect. Stop motion using objects is sometimes referred to as object animation.

Claymation
claymation is one of many forms of stop motion  animation. Each animated piece, either character or background, is "deformable"—made of a malleable substance, usually plasticine clay.
Each object or character is sculpted from clay or other such similarly pliable material as plasticine , usually around a wire skeleton called an armature, and then arranged on the set, where it is photographed once before being slightly moved by hand to prepare it for the next shot, and so on until the animator has achieved the desired amount of film. Upon playback, the human mind  of the viewer perceives the series of slightly changing, rapidly succeeding images as motion.
A consistent shooting environment is needed to maintain the illusion of continuity : objects must be consistently placed and lit, and work must proceed in a calm environment.
A sub variation of clay animation can be informally called "clay melting". Any kind of heat source can be applied on or near (or below) clay to cause it to melt while an animation camera  on a time- lapse setting slowly films the process.
Photography
Photography is the science art  and practice of creating durable images by recording light  or other electromagnetic radiation , either electronically by means of an image sensor , or chemically by means of a light-sensitive material such as photographic film
Typically, a lens  is used to focus the light reflected or emitted from objects into a real image  on the light-sensitive surface inside a camera during a timed exposure . With an electronic image sensor, this produces an electrical charge at each pixel  which is elecctronically processed  stored in a digital image file  for subsequent display or processing.  A negative image on film is traditionally used to photographically create a positive image on a paper base, known as a print , either by using an enlarger or by contact printing
Photography is employed in many fields of science, manufacturing (e.g. photolithography ) and business, as well as its more direct uses for art, recreational purposes, and mass communication.

3 IN one Project

For this were presented with a project called three in one and we had to either choose to explore Ritual, Liminal, Creature or we could combine them. The first thing I did was individually separate what each would meant and choose which one sticks out most to me.

What does RITUAL MEAN

The English word "ritual" derives from the Latin   ritualis, "that which pertains to rite  (ritus )". In Roman Juridical and religious usage, .
ritus was the proven way of doing something, or "correct performance, custom".The word "ritual" is first recorded in English in 1570, and came into use in the 1600s to mean "the prescribed order of performing religious services" or more particularly a book of these prescriptions
The original concept of ritus  is  related to the Sanskrit rta ("visible order)" in Vedic Religion , "the lawful and regular order of the normal, and therefore proper, natural and true structure of cosmic, worldly, human and ritual events".

A ritual is a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a sequestered place, and performed according to set sequence.Rituals may be prescribed by the traditions of a community , including a religious community. Rituals are characterized by formalism, traditionalism, invariance, rule-governance, sacral symbolism and performance.
Rituals of various kinds are a feature of almost all known human societies, past or present. They include not only the various worship  rites and Sacraments  of organized religions and cults, but also the rites of passage of certain societies, atonement and purification rites , oaths of allegiance , dedication ceremonies, coronations  and presidential inaugurations, marriages and funerals, school rush traditions and graduations, club meetings, sports events,  Halloween parties, veterans parades,Christmas  shopping and more. Many activities that are ostensibly performed for concrete purposes, such as Jury Trials , execution  of criminals, and scientific symposia , are loaded with purely symbolic actions prescribed by regulations or tradition, and thus partly ritualistic in nature. Even common actions liken hand shaking  and saying hello may be termed rituals.
We often participate in rituals and routine everyday – we all wake up, get ready for the day , have a bath put on makeup , clean, eat and leave the house and go to work and school. As creatures we often fall into habit, of a routine or ritual and if we do it many time it often becomes a thing and addicting leading us to do it everyday and just keep repeating instead of changing our routine.

I've also researched Taiwanese chicken beheading ritual. where they behead chicken for good luck
Chicken-beheading rituals are a quasi-judicial ritual  in Taiwanese culture . This has  acted as a dispute resolution mechanism for complicated and emotionally charged disputes that have not been settled in traditional courts or through private mediation. Chicken-beheading rituals have come to be associated with personal honesty in Taiwanese society and become more of a symbol of integrity than an actuality in contemporary Taiwan.

Brief History
Chicken-beheading rituals have historical roots in the legal traditions of China’s  Fujian Province , where over 70% of Taiwanese citizens can trace their lineage back to.
In feudal Fujianese society, individuals who were suspected of theft were taken before images of judges  and forced to proclaim an oath of innocence.Someone hiding behind the judge image would then point at the defendant who would supposedly break down and confess if they were guilty.[3]
Legal trials were also often conducted in the presence of images of deities as a way of forcing individuals to be honest. Temple managers even sometimes acted as judges themselves. These Fujianese trials have been embedded into Taiwanese culture and many other aspects of Fujianese tradition have also been transferred into Taiwanese chicken-beheading rituals, notably the use of oaths of innocence (赌咒, duzhou “oath-making”- literally meaning to gamble on an oath) and use of local deities to encourage people to fear breaking their oaths.[5]
In a broader sense, the history of chicken-beheading rituals represents the important role that religion plays in Taiwanese society; Taiwanese citizens turn to their local city deity to arbitrate when the  Taiwanese legal system  is insufficient.
The exact dates of the first instances of chicken-beheading rituals in Taiwan are unknown, yet the rituals were frequently practiced throughout the 19th Century and were still common during the Japanese rule of Taiwan in the first half of the 20th Century. However, the rate of chicken-beheading rituals declined as Taiwan rapidly modernised in the later half of the 20th Century.
Ritual
When Private Meditation  has not worked and the Taiwanese legal system has been bypassed or failed to resolve a complicated dispute, chicken-beheading rituals have be used as a dispute resolution mechanism.
The actual chicken-beheading ritual involves two individuals at odds with one another over a dispute that may be personal or legal in nature. Both bring a chicken to their local temple which is often the temple of their Local city ; the individuals then proclaims an oath of innocence while standing before their God
An oath of innocence normally involves a brief description of where somebody lives, their age, a description of their version of the contested events and a statement proclaiming one’s innocence and remonstrating that they are an honourable person.[7] Finally the person will make a contingent curse upon themselves, promising that some kind of grave misfortune will happen to them or their families if they lied in their oath
Symbolisation
Taiwanese chicken-beheading rituals have often led to the resolution of disputes because of what they symbolise.
Taiwanese chicken-beheading rituals are deeply laden with Symbolism . The chicken is considered a representation of the human that is Beheading it. The implication of beheading the chicken is that the human would be willing to die or lose their integrity if their oath of innocence was false. In such a god fearing society, as Taiwan traditionally has been the gravitas involved in symbolically Killing yourself after proclaiming your honesty and innocence has a profound power in the cultural imagination of society.
The reasons for using chickens, as opposed to other animals, in this ritual are both symbolic and practical. Chickens symbolise the sun  (陽) and positive forces of life and vitality in Chinese and Taiwanese culture. However, it is commonly understood that the main reason chickens were used is that chickens remained extremely cheap and plentiful in both southern China  and Taiwan. As such, ordinary people could not only easily decapitate a chicken without much hassle but also conveniently buy one from their local butcher  Butcher Due to their bloody nature, chicken-beheading rituals are rarely performed in modern Taiwan.
However I didn't stick with ritual but decided to add it in I changed my mind to creatures as I found I more easier and  I could do more and have lots of varieties

LIMINAL/LIMINALITY
The quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals , when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. During a ritual liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold  between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and a new way, which the ritual establishes.

Toys
toy is an item that can be used for play . Toys are generally played with by Children  and pets. Playing with toys is an enjoyable means of training the young for life in society. Different materials are used to make toys enjoyable to both young and old. Many items are designed to serve as toys, but goods produced for other purposes can also be used. For instance, a small child may pick up a household item and "fly" it through the air as to pretend that it is an airplane. Another consideration is interactive digital entertainment. Some toys are produced primarily as collectors s items and are intended for display only

Toys, and play in general, are important when it comes to growing up and learning about the world around us. The young use toys and play to discover their identity, help their bodies grow strong, learn cause and effect, explore relationships, and practice skills they will need as adults. Adults use toys and play to form and strengthen social bonds, teach, remember and reinforce lessons from their youth, discover the identity, exercise their minds and bodies, explore relationships, practice skills, and decorate their living spaces.
Toys really inspire and fascinate me three  movies in particular which do this is transformers, chucky and and toy story. The reason for this is when you're not looking they all start to move and transform but a second as you look they stop. Its like they know when your gonna do it. also what fascinates me is that you don't know its happening it could be happening now but we just dont know.

Weeping angel
The Weeping Angels are a race of predatory creatures from the long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who, resembling stone statues.
Doctor Who Weeping Angel from The Time of Angels.JPGAccording to The Doctor, the Weeping Angels "are as old as the universe (or very nearly), but no one really knows where they come from." He also describes them as "the deadliest, most powerful, most malevolent life-form ever produced." Weeping Angels are unusual as predators in that they neither kill nor directly parasitize their prey. Their usual mode of feeding is to make use of time paradoxes - with a single touch, a Weeping Angel can send a person into the past to a point before his/her own birth, and can then feed off the "potential energy" of the years which that victim would have lived in the present. The Doctor describes the Angels as "the only psychopaths in the universe to kill you nicely" because their victims are otherwise uninjured and may live out their lifespans in the past.
In their usual form, Weeping Angels resemble silent human-sized stone statues in the form of winged angels in draped clothing (such as might appear as tomb statuary in a Victorian graveyard). Apart from the wings, their standard form appears to mimic Earth humans (two arms, two legs, two eyes) even when they are infiltrating worlds on which the inhabitants differ from this form. Generally their facial features are bland and serene and their proportions human-normal. However, as they close in on more aware victims they transform to a more horrific, bestial and demonic aspect with wide-open mouths, vampiric teeth and clawed hands.
I've used this for my project for the glitch in 9 where i have used my sister as the weeping angel

Inspiring My work ARTISTS FOR 3 IN 1 RESEARCH PROJECT

Tim Burton
one of the many people who inspires most of my dark,gothic,horror/ macabre like  artwork and who I look to as an artist and become an animator would be Tim Burton.

TimBurton[2] (/ˈbɜrtən/; born August 25, 1958) is an American film
directorproducerartistwriter, and animator. He is known for his dark, gothic, macabre, and quirky horror and fantasy films such as BeetlejuiceEdward ScissorhandsThe Nightmare Before ChristmasEd WoodSleepy HollowCorpse BrideSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet StreetDark Shadows andFrankenweenie, and for blockbusters such as Pee-wee's Big AdventureBatman, its first sequel Batman ReturnsPlanet of the Apes,Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland.

Colleen Atwood is an American costume designer known for working on famous films such as Chicago,Memoirs of a Geisha,Snow White and The Huntsman and for working along side famous director Tim Burton on serval films such as Alice in wonderland, Edward Scissor-hands, Sweeney Todd Planet of the Apes Dark Shadows,Big Fish, sleepy Hallow etc... besides working with Tim Burton she has also worked alongside other famous directors including Rob Marshall, Robert Demme. besides designer costumes for films she has also designed costumes for the American band My Chemical Romance for their Album The Black parade designing band uniforms and for their 4th album DangerDays The True Life Of The Fabulous Killjoys.

Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueenCBE (17 March 1969 – 11 February 2010) was a British fashion designer and couturier.[2] He is known for having worked as chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001 and for founding his own Alexander McQueen label.[2] His achievements in fashion earned him four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA's International Designer of the Year award in 2003.

I have chosen these two designers because I feel their work relates to creatures. Think about it clothes could be creatures they play a huge role for a character and how the character looks like and acts

I have decided to create my final stories using claymation, stop motion and white board animation
White board/Cutout  animation is a technique for producing animations using flat characters, props and backgrounds cut from materials such as paper, card, stiff fabric or even photographs. The world's earliest known animated feature films were cutout animations (made in Argentina byQuirino Cristiani); as is the world's earliest surviving animated feature.also using white board and markers
Today, cutout-style animation is frequently produced using computers, with scanned images or vector graphics taking the place of physically cut materials. South Park is a notable example of this transition since its first episode was made with paper cutouts before switching tocomputer animation.
More complex figures depicted in cutout animation, such as in silhouette animation, often have joints made with a rivet or pin – or when made on a computer, an anchor. These connections act as mechanical linkage which have the effect of a specific, fixed motion.

Gothic

This is a sign I made on adobe illustator
Gothic fiction, which is largely dominated by the sub-genre of Gothic horror, is a genre or mode of literature that combines fiction, horror and Romanticism. Its origin is attributed to English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, subtitled (in its second edition) "A Gothic Story." The effect of Gothic fiction feeds on a pleasing sort of terror, an extension of Romantic literary pleasures that were relatively new at the time of Walpole's novel. Melodrama and parody (including self-parody) were other long-standing features of the Gothic initiated by Walpole. It originated in England in the second half of the 18th century and had much success in the 19th, as witnessed by Mary Shelley’sFrankenstein and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Another well known novel in this genre, dating from the late Victorian era, is Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The name Gothic refers to the (pseudo)-medieval buildings in which many of these stories take place. This extreme form of romanticism was very popular in England and Germany. The English Gothic novel also led to new novel types such as the German Schauerroman and the French roman noir.

Portrait
portrait is a paintingphotographsculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer.
